Sony Introduces Color-Customizable LinkBuds Clip to Compete with Apple’s AirPods
Sony's new LinkBuds Clip, priced at $230, enters the market as a direct challenger to Apple's AirPods, emphasizing color customization and an open-ear design. These clip-on earbuds sit outside the ear canal, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings while listening to music. The design facilitates natural conversations and environmental awareness, addressing a growing demand for wearable tech that doesn't isolate users from their environment.
The open-ear configuration comes with tradeoffs. Bass performance is weaker compared to in-ear models, and the lack of active noise cancellation limits their use in loud environments. Sound leakage remains an issue, though Sony has introduced a 'sound leakage reduction' mode and a 'voice boost' feature to enhance podcast clarity. The inclusion of a silicone cushion improves fit for smaller ears, while an IPX4 rating ensures resistance to sweat and light rain.
